Dare County Government 101 – Wednesday, September 23, 2009, 1:30 pm at the Dare County Administration Building, Room 168, 954 Marshall Collins Drive, Manteo. This will be an introduction and overview of Dare County government with presentations from various department directors including Bobby Outten, County Manager/County Attorney; David Clawson, Finance Director; Ray Sturza, Planning Director; Edward Lee Mann, Public Works Director; and Dorothy Toolan, Public Information Officer.

2009 Municipal Elections Candidate Forums – The LWV is sponsoring three candidate forums for 2009 municipal elections. Please attend to meet the candidates and learn about local issues. All forums are 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Health Reform 2009: Why Should We Care, What Should We Do –
Monday, November 16, 2009 at 7:00 pm at the Kill Devil Hills Town Hall. Come and learn about what reform might deliver, what might still be left to be accomplished, as well as how to influence legislation with informed advocacy. League members from the Piedmont Triaf League of Women Voters (Robin Lane and Dr. Teresa Bratton) will present the program followed by our Mary Ellen Hawthorne discussing "How a bill becomes law".

U.S. Women's History – Lecture and Film Series to be held the last Monday in January, February, March and April at the First Flight High School Media Center (Library) at 4:00-6:00PM. Dr. Lin Logan will present this series. Dr. Logan is a member of the local LWV of Dare County and an Adjunct Professor of History at Virginia Wesleyan College.
Overview - To examine American women's lives in the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, focusing on the ways that race, class and gender shaped their experiences and to acknowledge the political and social arrangements that structured American women's status and lives.

January 25, 2010 - Session I - This session will examine women's historiography from its beginnings in the 1960's, focusing on methods, materials, and difficulties in uncovering American women's past. Then to begin our series Native American Women, British colonial women, including the witch trials, women's role in the American Revolution, and women and the Constitution will be the topics.
February 22, 2010 - Session II - The Age of Reform prior to the Civil War, will disclose women's awakening desire for political recognition through reform movements, including the Temperance Movement, Abolitionist Movement, and Women's Rights Movement. Women's role in the Civil War, the impact of Southern Reconstruction, and the renewed drive to the vote will also be presented.
March 29, 2010 - Session III - The Progressive Era finds women demanding birth control, safe working conditions, and the vote. Margaret Sanger leads the Birth Control Movement, while Carrie Chapman Catt and Alice Paul lead the Women's Right to Vote Movement. Their failures and successes will be examined.
April 26, 2010 - Session IV - This session will begin with women and the Depression Years, followed by a review of the monumental role women played in WWII. Following their exit from the public world of work, women again began to clamor for equal rights. Black women's role in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's and the road to the ERA will be discussed.

Outer Banks Wind Power – February 25, 2010 at 7 pm at the Kill Devil Hills Town Hall. This presentation ("Outer Banks Wind Power: Not Just a Lot of Hot Air") will focus on the prospect of wind power on the Outer Banks. The talk will explore the topic of wind power as it may soon unfold with the recent agreement between UNC researchers and Duke Power to establish one to three experimental wind turbines in Pamlico Sound, and what that might imply about the future development of wind power on the Outer Banks, with both its promises and environemntal risks. This talk will be presented by Christopher Lazinski, a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel HIll. Wind power is Mr. Lazinski's area of specialized interest and concentrated study.

Census 2010 – March 25, 2010 at 7 pm at the Kill Devil Hills Town Hall. Akilah R. Ensley, a a Partnership Specialist with the US Census Bureau, will present an informational meeting on the importance of an accurate census.
