LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION
Founded in 1920 by women who led the struggle for women's right to vote, the League of Women Voters today has thousands of members, both men and women, nationwide who work to keep our government accessible and responsive to all Americans. A nonpartisan political organization, the League encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
The League does not support or oppose any candidate or political party. The League is a multi-issue organization There are twenty local Leagues in North Carolina, a state League and a national League.
| The League may take political action on issues on which members reach agreement. The League never supports a political candidate or party. However, the League encourages its members, as individuals, to take part fully in the political process. The League takes action in the public interest.
| Program is the League’s basis for both education and action efforts. League principles provide the authorization for adoption of national, state and local programs, which local Leagues work on simultaneously. Issues adopted for study and research range from local park facilities to international trade, from educational policies to offshore drilling, from air pollution to arms control, from health care to fair voting procedures. |

THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF DARE COUNTY
In Dare County, the League sponsors candidate forums prior to local elections for town, county and state officials and publishes a voters’ guide about candidates, their biographical information and platforms. Monthly informational meetings on topics of local interest are held for the general public. An annual project is the printing and distribution of the Dare County Citizens Guide which contains information about government and county services.
League members make a difference in influencing the broad range of public policy issues they care about. League members can begin to make a difference in the decisions made every day that affect their family and their community. If time is limited, members can still be a part of the League’s work. Members’ support gives us the strength we need to affect decisions made in our government. |
